Cannot check for an update

I am trying to update my iwatch from iwatch since my iphone is bricked and is in back order.

I tried updating my iwatch OS from 9.6.3. It seems to have downloaded. I went away while it was in charger. I came back to see the version is stil 9.6.3. When I say select software update on the watch, it says "Unable to check for updates". It is in charger. It is connected to internet. Thoughts?
