Mac OS Ventura - Why is PPD for printer grayed out?
Mac OS Ventura - Why is PPD for printer grayed out?
I have not had an easy ride with printing connectivity on Mac OS Mojave, and now Ventura, with my little Xerox B205.
Well, I THOUGHT it was as ‘easy as cake’, when I first hooked it up on a MBPro late 2013. The printer displayed via Bonjour and connected in seconds. But maybe a year later, I started getting an ‘AirPrint encryption credentials expired' and I could no longer print. And yeah, I did the dance of trying to create new certificates on the printer. I REALLY tried. NG
Eventually I set up printing on the 2013 MBPro Mojave as LPD, using a Xerox generic model C310 PPD.
Now I have a newer Macbook Pro, 2019, with Ventura 13.2.1
I first setup the Xerox on this 2019 Macbook using ‘generic postscript’, but that configuration does not allow me to choose envelope sizes when I am in the print dialogue.
So I grabbed the same Xerox generic driver (C310) as I used on my other machine, but when I went to add a printer using the Xerox PPD in the Linux folder, it’s GRAYED OUT.
I searched online and found a thread on Spiceworks, where someone said, ‘try putting the .ppd file in Users/Shared’
So I moved the folder to my User/Public folder, and THAT SOLVED IT.
What has changed in Ventura that makes me go thru this ridiculous dance?
Also, when I downloaded and unzipped a file from Gmail with a bunch of .png images of envelopes that I print frequently, when I double-clicked on a .png file to open it, the OS said 'NOT FOUND.
??? I’m looking at the file in Finder, unzipped & dragged right into my Docs folder, but Venura tells me ‘NOT FOUND’. Only when I open Preview 1st, then nav to the file, can I open it.
I checked Info on the file - sure enough, Preview IS the DEFAULT app to open .png files.
This is a weird OS. I am definitely going to update to the latest Ventura after I finish this post.
