MacBook Pro 6 digit verification code

Has anyone ever had their MacBook Pro ask you to enter a 6 digit verification code to unlock? I’ve spoken to two Apple support reps so far and they have never heard of it and they think I’m crazy.

Was this MacBook Pro a private purchase, or associated with a business or organization?

Or was this Mac a new purchase directly from Apple, or an authorized reseller?

The usual reason for a PIN request is a Mac associated with an organization, or that’s otherwise lost or stolen, or been marked as lost or stolen.

Those cases can display a PIN request.

One of the usual messages for this case: “Enter your system lock PIN code to unlock this Mac." It looks like this:

If that is what you are encountering… Per Apple:

If you can't unlock your Mac

After you locate your Mac, you can unlock it by entering the passcode that you created when you locked it with Find My.

If you can't remember that passcode, you have three options:

  • Sign in to iCloud.com/find, then select your Mac from the Devices menu. Select Unlock and follow the steps to verify your identity.
  • Unlock your Mac from your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Apple Watch using your device passcode.
  • Take your Mac to an Apple Authorized Service Provider along with your proof of purchase.

Bringing it in with proof of ownership would be typical, yes. See my previous reply.

Probably also want to change your Apple ID password, and enable two-factor authentication if not already enabled, check your trusted devices, and change all the other passwords, because one way to get into this is a compromised Apple ID.

"MacBook Pro 6 digit verification code: I just came back to my computer and is was locked. I never set up two-factor authentication"

Who's Mac is This?

If this a used Mac? Or is it someone else's Mac? If either is the case, then the seller/owner may have locked it with Find My.

Two-Factor Authentication:

Do you have Find My enabled? If so, then it would have been put this lock on it.

Using 6 Digits:

Is this supposed to be a log in pin? If you are talking about Two-Factor Authentication, then all is fine. It is supposed to be 6 digits.

Yes that’s exactly what I showed the rep and they didn’t know what that meant. This is my computer. I was on with Apple support earlier. There was a picture of a red lock next to it when I selected Find my device but the rep said that it was never locked, only pending from June 2023 when I thought I lost my MacBook at the airport. She said I never actually locked it since I’d been using my laptop all this time. The rep told me to delete the device from my iCloud account. I deleted it. Then she told me to select command R. Now the computer has a picture of a Lock and she says I have to take it to an Apple Store.
