No sound when connected iPad Pro 5th gen to Denon receiver

How do I get sound when connected to Denon receiver please? Speakers are connected by wire to Denon receiver. iPad Pro 5th gen connected to Denon by Apple converter and hdmi cable. Picture plays fine. Sound doesn’t. Do I need a speaker cable connected to the Denon via the headphones outlet maybe? If so where do I get such a thing? Thanks
