Adding voices ends up in an unknown error

Hi there,

as part of a linguistics course, I'd like to install more synthesized voices on Mac OS X. The download starts, but then a generic error pops up:

How to know what's failing?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.12

An unexpected error occurred while installing the

voices. Try again later.

Might try this...

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.

The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

Sys Prefs>Network>highlight the Interface you're using>Advanced>TCP/IP>Configure IPv4: Using DHCP.

If using Wifi, instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

System Preferences>Network>choose interface>Advanced>Proxies Tab, make sure none are set, like for HTTP & HTTPS.

System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

8.8.8.8

8.8.4.4

1.1.1.1

9.9.9.9

Apply.

I didn't see anything, but have you tried installing in Safe Mode?

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes or more.

Or see if it's system wide or user specific, try this...

Open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.

Does it work in the new account?

On CPU%, I briefly saw process "system_installd" (PID 997) using up significant amount of CPU.

On Energy usage, of course the web browser takes the heaviest toll as is the backup app.

The only application that appears is a sub-process of System Preferences, com.apple.preference.universalaccess.remoteservice (PID 96557).

If I run command

lsof -p 96557 | grep txt

I get the following:

https://bin.idrix.fr/?f2786d88fd240307#HfnF8PohgegpE3rqpTN5o7WUjrNYHhm3WSxamx6BjjQA

In /var/log/system.log, the only significant line that appears is

Oct 21 16:52:12 Lancelot system_installd[997]: rootless_apply: unprotected manifest /System/Library/Sandbox/rootless.conf

Hmmm...

It's harmless. Jetsam is a system that monitors memory use in OSX and iOS. It keeps a list of processes on the device, to monitor for situations where a device is running out of free RAM and look for things to kill to free up RAM. It also watches for processes that are using too much RAM; breaching a "high water mark" level.

This error message is because the code is shared between OSX and iOS but the _DirtyJetsamMemoryLimit key is only available on iOS.

You can read more about Jetsam at the following link.

Hm, that's a PID that doesn't currently exist. Could I instead use

lsof -c process_name | grep txt ?

What is the process I should be monitoring?

As for your other question:

I have VPN profiles configured that I turn on from time to time, but not currently.

No antivirus or cleaning app (I know, that's bad, but I never found the time to look for and compare Mac antiviruses)

Little Snitch is usually turned on to reduce tracking.
