Save space on your computer and download it to an external hard drive, instead...
Download All of iCloud:
One thought would be to download all of iCloud to an external drive. Once downloaded, verify your can access the data. Once verified, trash what is in iCloud.
As for seeing through the download, do so in Finder on a Mac. You would download it to an external drive, and then open the drive in Finder. Search through it using the search bar on the top-right corner of the Finder window.
Once downloaded, trash what is in iCloud Drive. Use my user tip: Getting a Quick and Direct "iCloud Drive-to-External Hard Drive" Download - User Tip
What a hassle!
The files were never in cloud until I bought this new mac. I am disturbed by cloud storage. Have purchased Synology backup system. Have a huge hard drive. I am beginning to HATE Apple.
Thank you.

Why are you telling me things I know or figured out? My objective is to use iCloud only minimally. I am taking everything off iCloud. I certainly do not need my files in the cloud. All of the really important financial documents are on a PC anyway since there is no way to manage such info on Mac.
I don't need or want to store things in iCloud, only share certain info between devices.
You might have HELPED by answering my question instead of attempting to train me.
