Look for "ClearClick Video to Digital Converter 3.0" on Amazon. I've recently used it to successfully capture VHS and Hi-8 tapes to USB flash drive then imported files into FCP to clean up and edit a bit. This version has a large LCD screen so you can see what you're capturing. VHS is via RCA jacks and Hi-8 can offer S-Video for (maybe) a little better quality. An hour of tape results in a 1.5 to 2gb mp4 file. Without a computer you can view the captured files via an HDMI connection to a TV. (I set it to 640x480 to get it the proper aspect ratio for the old tapes.)
