Group text tones

I can’t seem to find any way to assign a text tone to my group texts. I want a distinctive tone for the group. I have everyone assigned the same tone, but the group just uses the default text tone.

is there a way to assign a tone to a group text?

Hey there SummitCity,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We'll be happy to help. Use the following guide to change Messages notifications: Change message notifications on iPhone - Apple Support

"You can choose a specific sound or vibration pattern to play when you get a message from one specific contact or group.

  1. Open the Messages app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap a conversation, then tap the number or name of the person or group you’re communicating with at the top of the conversation.
  3. Tap Info, tap Edit in the top-right corner, then tap Text Tone.
  4. If you don’t see Edit, tap Create New Contact or Add to Existing Contact.
  5. Do any of the following:
    • Specify a tone or sound: Tap a sound below Alert Tones (or tap Tone Store to download one).
    • Specify a vibration pattern: Tap Haptics, then choose an option (or tap Create New Vibration to make your own).
    • Mute notifications for this conversation: Tap None below both Haptics and Alert Tones.

To give this contact the option to override a Focus, so any important messages can get through, turn on Emergency Bypass. You might turn it on for a family member, caretaker, or colleague, for example." (retrieved from resource linked above)

Take care.

As destiny241 answered back on October 25, 2023 in this very thread, it's not a feature available on the iPhone.

And, as destiny241 also recommended in that same post, if you want Apple to know your thoughts, use the feedback link which she provided.

I don't think the above answer is correct. You can only assign tones by contact. So, unless the group exists in your Contacts list, there's no way to assign a tone specifically to it through Messages.

Please allow us to assign a ringtone to group text messages! My dad can’t hear that little ding!

Apple doesn't read here in this user-to-user forum for feedback or suggestions. You can, however, let them know your thoughts here:

Product Feedback - Apple

Meanwhile, why not change his text tone to somethng louder in Settings>Sounds & Haptics>Text Tone. If he can't here the ding for the group messges, he probably can't hear it for other messages, either.

Sorry, but this is not the answer. I'm not sure what you're looking at dadakeyw, but none of these options show up the way you describe.

You are simply choosing one person in the group conversation and changing their specific texttone.

We (the hundreds of us) are looking to change the entire group text to be a specific texttone.

I know this can be done on an Android, but I don't think this is available on the iPhone. I don't understand how this necessary feature isn't addressed, but maybe if we keep asking...

Hello SummitCity,

You cannot add a specific tone for a group message. It will only use the selected tone for all messages.

If you'd prefer to provide any feedback to Apple about this, then we'd recommend doing so here: Product Feedback - Apple They review all feedback provided, but you may not hear back on any given. Apple does not request unsolicited ideas.

Wishing you well.

Cheers.
