Do Finder tags cause error code -8076 on macOS 13.6 Ventura? And how to resolve this?

I've recently upgraded from iMac 27" running macOS Monterey 12.7 to MacBook Pro M2 running macOS Ventura 13.6 and I did not set up the Mac from backup. I set it up as new and just logged into my Apple ID. The laptop is now part of my ecosystem that is shared with the other two Macs running Monterey.

However, a couple of days into using it I've started to get error code -8076 that I have never seen on any of my previous Macs, and I've only had Macs since 2008.

I've found that the error has something to do with:

permissions (I am the admin, so I should have no issues with permissions)

corrupt files (impossible as I've tried many files that were all different)

files used by another programme (not possible either as I have nothing else open when I test this issue)

I tried deleting the finder preference file and yet the issue persists

I restarted in Safe Mode and the issue persists in Safe Mode

I removed the tags off the files, and voilà, the problem disappeared instantly

I tested it on the same files again, with tags, and without them. I found that while manipulating tagged files (even just selecting them) causes the error to appear, however, once the tags are removed, the issue disappears.

My question is, how does one get rid of this issue? I understand tags are not the most vital part of the system, but I use them and I expect the machine with the cost of a MacBook Pro in 2023 not have this issue that is more annoying than anything else.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Have you installed and run any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus or VPN apps on your Mac?

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.
