Preview not saving edited photos (JPEGs) on MacBook running OSX 14.0 (Sonoma)

It seems that since updating my MacBook Pro (2019 16") to the latest version of OSX (Sonoma 14.0), the preview application refuses to save any photo that has been edited, presenting the following (rubbish and unhelpful) message: "The document xxx could not be autosaved" followed by "Your changes will not be saved until the problem is resolved. You can also duplicate the document or discard your changes to close it." However, even if I duplicate the file, the same erroneous message appears.

There is no reason why these files cannot be edited, as immediately prior to upgrading to the new OSX, it worked perfectly well, as expected on other similar files.

So basically, Preview now appears to be useless for making any edits to any photo (JPEG) files.

Thanks guys!

I upgraded to 14.3 2 days ago, and my problems (color only, I haven't really used greyscale - however the problems I was experiencing were the SAME) - 14.3 seems to have solved the problem and it's apparently an important security update.

For me, upgrading from 14.1 to 14.2.1 did not help. Same problem. But the other obscure workaround mentioned above does work for me. After making the edits to the JPG, I exported to PDF, which worked fine, and then exported the PDF back to JPG, which also worked fine.

Weird one. Seems like a bug in the latest release to me. Any chance that Apple might take a look at this one?

Having the same problem. Here is a workaround that solved it for me:

Open up the ColorSync Utility (/Applications/Utilities). Open the image file you want to edit. At bottom left, there'll be dropdowns for "Match to Profile" and "None." Click the "None" one and select Display —> Apple RGB (or some other RGB). Save the image file in ColorSync Utility.

Now open up the saved file with Preview. You should be be able to save it as normal.

hope this helps!

I FOUND A WORK-AROUND!!

I'm having the same problem with greyscale images. I scanned three photos, two are greyscale and one was color. The color photo I was able to edit in Preview and save, with no problem. The two photos I scanned as greyscale would not "save" nor "autosave." I opened Security settings and gave Preview full access, but that didn't fix the problem. So I opened the greyscale jpeg, saved it as a PDF, and then saved the PDF as a jpeg. It fixed the problem with that image! Now all we need is a global fix.

Exporting saved photo as a PDF, then back as a jpeg, This option worked, but, it's not an ideal workaround. Apple could not help on this first attempt other than suggesting that I have the latest version, which I do, and then reloading operational software, they didn't even seem to know this was an issue, Not doing that just yet. Like everyone else replying, I noticed this started on recent software updates beginning with 14.2 I believe.

This seems to be a similar problem I experienced with GraphicConverter a while ago:

GraphicConverter version 12.0.3 browser did not display a grayscale .jpg with ICC_Profile:ProfileDescription:Dot Gain 20%. The Browser's Exif information fields were also blank. The latest Photoshop inserts ICC Dot Gain 20% to its grayscale images. Deleting or changing such ICC corrected the issue. This was fixed in later GraphicConverter.

And sure enough: macOS 14.3.1 Preview.app can not edit and exported such grayscale image as .jpg ("could not be exported as a.jpg").

One workaround would be GraphicConverter > Picture > Colors > Change to TrueColor. Then also Preview.app and edit and export that as .jpg.

GraphicConverter 12.0.8 can edit and save such images so I'd recommend that as a better workaround.
