imessage with only ipad

Hello, I have only an ipad an no iphone. People imessage me by adding my icloud email to my contact in their phone. The primary issue with this is in sms group messages. If someone creates an sms group message, their iphone doesnt default to my phone number as opposed to my icloud email. It tires to send sms messages to my icloud email which obviously doesnt work and results in unreadable messages being sent to my email. This seems like an oversight by apple. I own an apple product and should be able to use imessage without major issue. Is there a way to get it so that sms group messages from iphones will be sent to my phone number?

Ah, I understand. So you have a non-Apple phone but SMS messages sent to that number are failing. If you go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive>You can Receive iMessage to and Reply From, is your mobile number listed? If so, remove it.

Did you look at what I suggested? Are these people with iPhones who are creating the group messages?

Another thing to try is to tell people to remove your email address from your contact information in their phones.

But why cant the sender's iphone just default to my phone number for sms groups as opposed to using my apple id? That seems like an obvious solution to me. I'm not asking for sms to be delivered to my ipad, i just want to receive the sms messages on my phone. To be clear, i am not currently receiving the sms group messages at all. not even on my phone.

Well, it's not that sms messages sent to my number are failing, its that the sms messages are being sent to my icloud account. My icloud account and phone number are completely disassociated. I can tell that other people's iphones are trying to send sms messages to my icloud account because my icloud email has been receiving cryptic messages associated with people's phone numbers. The sender could probably manually select my phone number when sending a group sms but it would be too difficult to communicate that to everyone. It seems that their iphones are sending sms to my icloud email by default.

Yes, my mobile number is not listed in the path that you indicated. My mobile number is not associated with my apple ID.

They are people with iPhones that are creating the groups.

If people remove my email address then they won't be able to imessage me on my iPad.

Your iPad cannot send or receive SMS messages unless it is connect to an iPhone through Text Message Forwarding.

This is not an oversight by Apple. It's how SMS works. SMS messages require cellular voice circuitry and an active cellular number. Even cellular iPads don't have either. The number assigned to them is for billing purposes only and is not configured by the carrier to do that. You are absolutely free to use iMessage without issue, however.
