Zoom degrades overall machine performance when actively being used

I’m using Zoom, usually with screen sharing and recording, and my laptop appears to get slow and lag in places. It’s also getting hot and I can hear the fans coming on. If I am writing (using a digital tab), the writing glitches or breaks in places. I’m concerned about the performance of the computer when I have to take Zoom meetings with more than one person.

What is the exact model of the laptop and version of macOS being used? You can get that information by clicking the Apple menu and selecting "About This Mac". It is always a good idea to provide this information when asking for assistance.

Also what version of Zoom are you using? Make sure you are using the most up to date version. I believe one of the Zoom menus will have an option to check for updates.

You may want to run the third party app EtreCheck and post the report here so we can examine it for clues. It will also give us the exact model & version of macOS being used. If you are using any anti-virus apps, cleaning/optimizer apps, or third party security software, or even VPN software, then uninstall them by following the developer's instructions since these types of apps are not needed on a Mac and usually cause more problems than they solve.

Using Zoom requires a strong wi-fi connection and signal.

Check your computer has plenty of memory / storage free for the computer to operate smoothly.

(Eg: Good to have at least 50Gb free, at all times, in which the computer can operate.)

Ensure good ventilation, and check that nothing covers microphone, speakers, openings in the computer.

If it is possible for your set-up / provider hardware.

You may want to try using an ethernet cable between modem and computer for important Zoom sessions.

(You would likely need to use a suitable adapter between the ethernet cable and your MacBook Air port.)

(The main drawback is the computer is less portable during the Zoom session.)

All the best :-)
