Why when making outgoing call name appears on screen but was said not to be in contacts?

Why when making outgoing call name appears on screen but was said not to be in contacts. I broke down today, crossed the road to guys residence. I borrowed his phone and dialed my wife’s phone number and it’s showing my wife’s name. Is there some kind of caller ID. Gentlemen said she is not in my contacts.

I’m not clear about “was said not to be in contacts”. I have never gotten that message, so what said it?

With iOS 16 and higher if a number that calls you is not in your contacts it will display the caller ID information that is sent by the called network. With earlier versions it would just display the phone number. So when you called your wife’s number it showed her name because that is the name assigned to her phone by her carrier.

I broke down and borrowed phone from gentleman that lived there on side of road. I called my wife from his android phone. Dialed my wife’s number and her name popped up. The gentleman said her name was not in his contacts. Cause I asked if he knew her. In my experience if the name is not in contacts then just number dialed will appear. Am I tripping or something I don’t know. Lol
