Using the on-screen keyboard while iPad is attached to the magic keyboard

Since buying my new iPad, I have not been able to figure out how to gain access to the onscreen keyboard while the iPad is mounted on the floating keyboard. At times, I need to access letters that are not on my German keyboard. Previously, the external keyboard for my last iPad had a key that would bring up the on-screen keyboard and I could easily type out a word or see where the extra letters are located on my keyboard after having switched the language settings for my keyboard. I know it is possible to access both keyboards at the same time, because today I suddenly discovered a way to bring it up the in Pages, but now this option has disappeared. I not only require the on-screen keyboard in Pages, but also when I am in Safari, as I often need to translate words into Czech.
