I have a PDF that I’ve been using on a regular basis on my iPad. I opened it on my phone yesterday and it worked fine. Now all of a sudden it says ‘Cannot Open Document; Unable to open [file].” The same thing is happening on my iPad. I also tried importing it to the Files app in which it only shows the title and file size when I open it. I haven’t done anything besides read and highlight it.

This issue also started for me in the past month or so. Random error and cannot open a PDF file that I was using Books to view. BTW these PDFs have been viewed and marked up in Books for YEARS, no problems. In past month has happened twice so far.
Contacted Apple Support and ended up nothing they could do and I lost the document.
I had to pay to download again but now I have all these PDFs in Files as a backup.
Glad I did as happened again but at least I can go to Files and get my backup.
Not sure what changed but seems that something did…?
