Adding various aspect ratio images to a Keynote presentation

I'm trying to put my first presentation together using Keynote (v13.2) macOS Ventura 13.4.1(c) containing bullet-point slides and lots of photographic images of various aspect ratios - 4x3, landscape and portrait, square and non regular sizes. I'd hoped to be able to simply add the images with a black background when not precisely 4x3. The portrait orientation crops to landscape and the format tabs don't seem consistent and are confusing to put it mildly. Any help gratefully received.

I have no issues as you describe with my system, so there is hope for improvement.

First update Ventura to the latest version which is 13.6

If you still have problems with Keynote after updating, try the following:

  • move Keynote to the bin
  • empty the Bin
  • shutdown the Mac and restart with the shift key pressed down until the Apple icon appears, start up will take longer than usual as it is repairing the startup drive.
  • When fully booted, restart the Mac normally.
  • Install Keynote again from the Mac App Store the test

Thank you for your reply Gary. I did update and then had a play around. The solution was to use the Blank Slide Layout rather than the dedicated photograph ones - just copy and paste the images and drag to the edges as necessary. That and the discovery that clicking on the image or the background gave different menus.

I meant to reply sooner but struggled to find my post - I expected to be offered my recent posts (this is my first one) and in the end had to search for it with keywords - unless I'm missing something again ...... (old person)
