Does Apple have plans to manufacture a device that utilizes the USB ports in vehicles to make their CarPlay wireless?

Apple usually keeps new devices undisclosed until release date, and will aim to go above and beyond what others have tried, if they choose to go there. You will not find answers here on any of Apple’s plans for new devices.

  • The full CarPlay experience uses a car’s built-in screen, and replaces any built-in functions with some of the iPhone’s apps, which probably requires more bandwidth than bluetooth can facilitate. USB from iPhone to car works fine for that (as well as power to the mobile device).
  • For just using the car’s sound system, that doesn’t require CarPlay. You can use the car’s media system as Bluetooth speakers without any extra device already, if the car’s console has bluetooth. If your car doesn’t have bluetooth, then replace the radio unit with a more modern one that has bluetooth.
  • There are already mount systems for iPhone (and iPad) to use those in cars, as third party solutions.

This dongle doesn’t seem all that likely. Whether this is USB to Bluetooth dongle, or a USB Wi-Fi dongle, or something else. Not if the infotainment system itself doesn’t already expect this hardware dongle upgrade, or the infotainment system firmware cannot be retrofit to add support for this dongle.

I’d also doubt that a completely transparent USB to wireless bridging for CarPlay dongle is even particularly feasible.

For folks seeking this, this is currently a retrofit or aftermarket infotainment system, or a vendor-upgraded infotainment system enabling some extra-cost in-built wireless communications feature.

There are aftermarket CarPlay infotainment systems. Not for an existing and expected-to-be-wired system.

Whether the OEM infotainment systems can be upgraded to added capabilities or a higher-spec infotainment system depends on the details.

But… We don’t know what Apple might or might not plan.

If you’re thinking about creating this dongle, you'll probably want to enroll in Apple’s MFi program, and then discuss this dongle directly with Apple.
