Updating an iPhone Past iOS12:

It's Time to Upgrade:
iOS14 is no longer aviaalbe to anyone for updating. If you need go past iOS13, then iOS16 or iOS17 would insta, given your device

There are many cases in which someone running iOS 12 might "need [to] go past iOS 13" but in which iOS 16 or iOS 17 would not install. It all depends on which iPhone they have.

It's not clear from the OP's post, or tag line, what iPhone the OP has now. It could be an iPhone 5s, 6, or 6 Plus. For those three phones, the latest version of iOS 12 is the end of the line.

For some newer phones, iOS 15 would be the end of the line. For others, iOS 16 would be. Three iPhones (the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR) are new enough to be capable of running both iOS 12 and iOS 17.
