Apple Watch battery drains after updating to watchOS 10.1

Using series 5 watch. Since updating my watch goes to under 10% battery after about 9 hours. With watchos 10 it lasted 16-17 hours with AOD and minimal useage. Thoughts/suggestions (besides wait for next os)?

Dear all,

Let me share all the things that did NOT solve this problem and the one thing that DID solve this for me.

Background: iPhone 13 running iOS17, Apple Watch series 6, updated from WatchOS 9 directly to WatchOS 10.1.1 after which battery life dropped from 18+ hours to 8 hours, and this did not improve for several weeks.

What did NOT solve it:

  • updating to iOS 17.1.1 or 17.1.2
  • multiple restarts and hard resets of Apple Watch and iPhone
  • deleting all third-party apps from Watch, then rebooting iPhone and Watch
  • resetting all privacy and security settings (forcing each app to ask for access to location etc again)
  • unpairing Watch from iPhone, then repairing with iPhone and reinstalling from the last Watch back-up

What DID solve it for me:

  • unpairing Watch from iPhone, then repairing with iPhone as a new Watch.

The excessive battery drain was solved immediately. This procedure comes with great disadvantages, e.g. I lost all my watch-faces with edited choice of complications, I had to reconnect the Watch with my activity tracker app, I had to rearrange all app icons to the positions I prefer in the app viewer, I had to choose playlists of songs to be downloaded to Apple Watch again, I had to go through my Apple Watch settings and adjust these to my preferences, and probably a few more nuisances. Despite these, I am happy that my Apple Watch lasts through the day again...

I hope this helps some of you...

Absolutely sick of Apple. The stuff costs a fortune, needs updated virtually every second week, and as it turns out, the updates are often worse than any Windows viruses I’ve ever got.

This week alone, my two year old £300 watch lasts 6 hours, my £300 4 year old iPad needed to have apps deleted because the software update and operating system takes 16gb of the 32gb storage, my £1000 phone lags because it’s still “indexing”, while my £200 earphones mics no longer work.

The only difference I’ve even used is adding the Snoopy watch face to my watch. All the rest is superfluous.

All this while iCloud has jumped £24 a year in price!!

However, my THIRTEEN year old Dell laptop is running just fine after a cheap SSD and RAM upgrade.

I’m moving back to Android and away from this Apple Eco System pyramid scheme.

Apple watch was a major game changer between smartwatches and sportwatches/ activity trackers. Hiking could last around 10 hour with apple watch with no problem. Phone battery was a bit drained but at least the activity was recorded. But since the latest update to 10.1 is apple watch becoming just another smartwatch. I certainly hope, that the next update for WatchOS will solve this problem - I hope they solved it before people start switching to other sportwatches. Yep I can say apple watch was an amazing sportwatch without being sorry.

Anyone else go from the battery drainage problems to being stuck in a boot loop? My series 5 watch was having battery issues after updating to 10.1 and after about a week and a half just suddenly stopped having those issues. Everything was fine for a few days and yesterday it suddenly got stuck in a boot loop. Hard reset hasn’t worked. Find my sound hasn’t worked. Unpairing hasn’t worked. So when the new update comes to fix it I won’t even be able to update! Apple broke my watch!

At my appointment at the Apple Store I was told to keep my phone with me. While I ride my bike and go to the gym. WTF?! Why did I buy a cellular Apple watch if I have to keep my phone with me at all times in order to not run the battery down in 2 hours? These are exactly the times I DON"T want to have to lug my phone around. If there isn't some sort of fix for this by the time I need a new watch, this will definitely be my last cellular watch and maybe my last Apple watch. Maybe I'll just go back to wearing a quality timepiece.

Same here. For now, a Garmin watch has replaced my Apple Watch. It works surprisingly well. Only needs charging every couple weeks and has better fitness, sleep, and activity functionality. Interestingly, it communicates with my iPhone 13 Pro as well as my Apple Watch did. This evolution with watchOS has made me question my subscription to Apple One and future Apple product purchases. Now that I can’t use Apple Fitness+, because I don’t like my Apple Watch anymore I’m really questioning do I use any of the other services for the $38 a month on the family plan that they’re charging. I’m thinking there are better alternatives. As I contemplate leaving the Apple ecosystem; I am finding Windows, Google Docs, and Android have improved, are flexible, stable, and more secure than they used to be.

This is all ridiculous. I've got an Apple Watch Series 8, and you're saying I need to disable most of the features I purchased it for in able to use it.

I've re-paired my watch twice. I re-set it my watch as a new watch, yet even when I spend a day at home, not using music, fitness, timers, or ANYTHING, my watch is at 45% by 4:00.

I'm think I'm done.
