Updating to iOS 17.0.3 from iOS 14.1 on iPhone Xr

I am finally attempting to update my iPhone Xr from iOS 14.1 (old, I know) to 17.0.3. I am able to download the update, but it errors out when I attempt to install it. It spins on "Verifying Update" for a while and then times out with an error message telling me it couldn't install iOS 17.0.3. I have tried erasing the download and retrying with a new one, resetting the phone (volume up, volume down, hold power), and powering the phone off and on. I believe the Xr will take the update to 17.0.3, but is there a problem coming from that old of an iOS? I have yet to try going through iTunes and my computer because I'm not very confident in that working either. Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Since you're still unable to execute the update, the next step would be to connect the iPhone to your computer and complete the update. Just attempted to do the update using iTunes. I often get frustrated using iTunes as it is, but gave it shot. Did a backup and started the update. It downloaded the update, but it hung up preparing the update. Believe iTunes is current, 12.13.0.9. Don't believe it really ever "touched" the phone because it never showed the black install screen and all of my apps and data are there. After about 45 minutes of preparing, I gave up and closed out iTunes. May give it another try some other time, but don't feel like giving up another chunk of my time again right now. I usually watch it so that I can see any possible issues or error messages since things haven't gone well. Any other suggestions on how to accomplish this update would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
