I tried to move Spotlight out of the menu bar while holding the ⌘ key, but a "not-allowed" cursor shows up, and the icon is snapped back into the bar when you let go the mouse cursor. It seems like Spotlight (and other icons) are locked and glued to the menu bar. Is there any way to get around this?

None whatsoever. It is there to stay.
In the case of Spotlight on the menu extras menu bar, there is no System Preference to remove it.
SuperBoUtd, the method you've described works fine...if you're running Big Sur or later on your Mac.
The OP is running Catalina, so that's not an option.
I did find an article that describes how to accomplish this in Catalina, but it involves a fair amount of "fiddling" in Terminal: Scroll to the end of this article
They were put there by the operating system and cannot be removed unless a System Preference setting allows for their (unchecked) removal.
How so? Where do I find this System Preference(s)?
Is there maybe some SUDO-action and/or system file edit to get around this?
Don't believe VikingOSX, you can turn it of in the preferences.
