Can’t sort photos correctly with apples sorting function as it sorts by date acquired and not by time taken. This happens both in album and normal. Is there an app that will correctly sort by time and date that is free? Or is there a workaround someone knows of please. I find it kind of silly that apple’s functionality doesn’t allow for proper sorting.

We understand that the photos you've received from your wife aren't sorted by the date as you'd except.
You can sort your photos the way you'd like to see them within your albums as outlined here: Filter and sort photos and videos in albums on iPhone - Apple Support
"Sort photos and videos in an album
.To move an individual photo, touch and hold the thumbnail, then drag it to a new location for a custom sort."

The photos in question are from my wife’s iPhone from our trip, she shared them with me on my iPhone. Dates are the way they’re supposed to be on the photos but Apple ignores this and sorts by when the photos are put in your phone.
Im simply saying it should sort by the photo date and NOT when added. Seems a bit counterintuitive to me when your trying to make an album and keep your trip photos in the order they were taken.
Your answer is what the actual problem is sorry. The app will NOT sort imported photos by their date, it sorts when acquired. I’d rather not do it manually as there are over 1000 pics so finding where they fit according to time and date taken would be a major undertaking, hence the reason for my original post.

How did your wife go about sharing these photos with you on your phone?
Where in Photos are you looking when you observe your wife's photos in order by date acquired? You said "both in album and normal" but where is "normal"?
Normal = Library
wife sent via messenger or air drop.

You are being clear, but I cannot duplicate your result for either AirDrop or Messages from my wife's phone to mine. Both sort fine in the Library/All Photos view. In the Recents view, of course, they sort correctly at the bottom as most recently received.
When my wife sends with Facebook Messenger, the capture date is lost entirely.
You might be onto something with how they’re received. I’ll do a test on some transfers and see what happens. Same photos but try all variants. I don’t want to mess with the folder I’m concerned about as I’ve spent a lot of time manually moving things around. Creating a photo book and stuff we did on the first day appears at the end and looks a bit silly for date and country.
