Adding memory to the iMac 21.5” Intel is a project. Basically, you have to entirely disassemble the iMac to get at the memory slots.

The memory needed is PC4-21300 DDR4.

If you still have an HDD in this iMac, an upgrade to an external SSD tends to be the best benefit for the cost, as compared with a RAM upgrade from 16 GB.

That iMac 27” upgrade and that related article are unfortunately not applicable to the iMac 21.5” model here.

Apple won’t upgrade memory. An Apple authorized service provider might. Or the OP here may be inclined to disassemble the iMac themselves, of course.

side note:

there are four types of mac:

• those you can upgrade yourself easily;
• those that you can upgrade or have done by AASP / ARS;
• those that you can upgrade, but it is not supported (for the techies);
• those that can Not be upgraded.
