RAM is cheap and easy to add to a 27-inch iMac. However, if you are adding RAM because your computer is slow, chances are it won't change much. The majority of reports of "slow" iMacs here are ultimately traced to to old-school mechanical hard drives or damaged Fusion drives, not a paucity of RAM.

A quick test:

• Is the computer slow to start up (boot)?
• Are big apps (Office; Photoshop; etc_ slow to launch?
• Once launched, do those big apps run at acceptable speed?

Three "yes" answers strongly point to a drive issue.

You can also use Apple's Activity Monitor (usually in the Utilities folder) and select "Memory" from the top tabs. In the chart at the bottom, look at Memory Pressure and Swap Used. If Pressure is in the green and Swap is under about 50MB, your iMac was not starved for RAM at the time of the test.
