2010 Formatted SSD installation into 2012 MacBook Pro

I had a logic board failure in a 2010 MacBook Pro and removed the SSD that was running High Sierra. I want to purchase a 2012 and was wondering if the drive can be swapped with the one from the 2010 and what issues could possibly arise with the swap. Thanks in advance

The logic board does not get “formatted”. Everything you need to start the computer lives on the ssd or hdd. Although your 2012 MBP currently runs from the Catalina OS installed on its drive, if you tell it to startup from a different drive, then it will run the compatible OS it finds there.

If you install the High Sierra ssd, the MBP can and will boot into that OS. From there you could update the installed OS up to Catalina, if you wish.
