Missing or deleted rows in Numbers?

In Numbers, I filtered a table using several criteria so I had a few rows with many hidden rows between. I then deleted the selected rows and copied them to another worksheet. They pasted in just fine. However, the hidden rows in the first worksheet are now missing, perhaps deleted? They didn't paste into the second worksheet, but they are not in the first worksheet once the filters were removed. In the original worksheet, when I go to the column I used to filter, next to Quick Filter, it says "Hide 47 Values." (See screenshot attached.) I'm guessing those 47 values are the ones I'm missing, but I can't find a way to unhide them. They simply do not show up. So, did I screw this worksheet up completely and delete rows that I didn't mean to? Is there any way to recover them since apparently the worksheet still thinks they're there?

I reproduced your scenario and indeed the deleted rows are gone. It's probably too late now but if you had noticed soon enough you could have executed enough Undos to retrieve your lines. I was able to do at least a dozen.

The pop-up menu shows (Hide 47 Values) but it seems to be a bug. They are the 47 different values on the hidden rows and deleting the rows simply failed to update the menu item. I hope you can retrieve an old version from Time Machine (from File / Revert To).

I don't know if you have already figured a plan for the next time, but here's what you could do.

  • First you just copy the selected rows to your other spreadsheet, then...
    • If there are not too many visible rows you delete them one per one
    • If they are very numerous you fill a particular column with something that a sort will put last, like ~~ or first, like !!. Finally you deactivate the filter, sort by that column and delete the grouped rows together.

Yeah, I was afraid of that. Thank you for checking behind me and confirming the bad news. Unfortunately, I didn't notice soon enough, and I've made way too many changes to the whole workbook to try to undo eleventy-billion times. Wish the undo only applied to the worksheet you're on, but that would require the program to keep too many undo possibilities. One odd thing I've noticed since - when I use one of the "hidden" titles, the "Hide 47 Values" changes. So, it knows which ones got deleted, but they're still not there. Thought that was weird. The only good news is, this is the least used worksheet in the spreadsheet, so even though I lost 47 entries, it could have been much, much worse. I definitely learned my lesson and will only delete/move one row at a time. Seems like not deleting hidden rows should be the default but I guess not. Thanks, again, for your help.
