The iPad User Guide provides details:

Connect iPad to a display with a cable - Apple Support

If your iPad has a Lightning port, you will require an Apple Lightning to Digital AV Adapter along with a suitable HDMI cable - or a Lightning to VGA Adapter for older monitors that only have a corresponding analogue video input.

  • Lightning Digital AV Adapter

  • Lightning to VGA Adapter

If instead your iPad has a USB-C port, you will not be able to use Lightning adapters. Instead, you will require the equivalent USB-C Adapters for HDMI and VGA:

  • USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter

  • USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter

If you have a 2021/2022 model of iPad Pro, for compatible monitors that support DisplayPort over USB-C or Thunderbolt3, you can also make a direct connection using an appropriate cable.

There's only one Lightning digital AV Adapter you can buy from Apple, and it should work on both iPhones and iPads.

What happens when you try to use the one you have on the iPad exactly?

What model of iPad do you have exactly? Are you sure its a Lightning-port-equipped model?

Newer iPad models have a USB-C port instead of Lightning.

If it does have a lightning port, make sure when you try to use it first, the iPad is connected to Wi-Fi so it can download any firmware update it may need for the Digital AV adapter. After it downloads it at least once, it can be used offline directly.
