iPhone 12P Creates Duplicate Contacts when Editing

Almost every time I do a significant edit on an existing contact, it immediately creates a duplicate contact. I am running 17.0.3 and this most recently happened yesterday when I added a related name to a contact and the other day I added an image to a different contact and I think this is what created so many duplicates in the past. Any ideas to prevent this or if this is a known issue?

Hi strix1,

Thanks for contacting Apple Support Communities!

We understand that you need some help to eliminate duplicate contacts on your iPhone.

You may have more than one account associated with your Contacts app which can cause this. This resource will show you how to eliminate the duplicate contacts you see: Get rid of duplicate contacts on iPhone - Apple Support

"Get rid of duplicate contacts on iPhone

In the Contacts app , link contact cards for the same person in different accounts so they appear only once in your All Contacts list. When you have contacts from multiple sources, you might have multiple entries for the same person in Contacts. To keep redundant contacts from appearing in your All Contacts list, contacts from different sources with the same name are linked and displayed as a single unified contact.

Resolve duplicate contacts

If you have more than one contact card with the same first and last name, you can merge the duplicate contacts.

  1. Below My Card, tap Duplicates Found.
  2. Tap individual contacts to review and merge them, or tap Merge All to merge all duplicate contacts."

This is also a great resource which explains how your contacts accounts work: Manage and delete contacts on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

We hope this helps.

Cheers!

Thank you Miche11e_P for your reply.

This issue is not with sharing...a long time ago I did share between my iPhone and iPad, however, due to duplicate photos I turned off all sharing. My issue is IMMEDIATELY when I update a contact with certain details (adding an image, notes, email address) on a contact listed only once, as soon as I hit "DONE" it adds a second contact with the same information. I don't know if does WHILE I am editing or just when I hit "DONE." I used the merge or remove duplicate contacts about a year ago but now when it creates one of these duplicate contacts that option is no longer available. I have closed my contacts app and also restarted my iPhone thinking the duplicate was just temporary, but it remains. Once this happened and when I deleted the contact (held down the contact then hit delete in the menu), both disappeared which sadly made me create an excel sheet on my PC with ALL my contacts just in case that happened again.

So just to clarify, this is only when I edit an existing contact and exit out of that contact a duplicate is created. I hope this clarifies some information for you to assist me!! :)
