My external drive (purchased 2022) shows as read-only on my iPad Pro. Is there any way to copy & paste files directly to it?

And if so, how? I've read elsewhere that the external drive may need to be "formatted" a certain way, but in practical terms I have no idea what that means and whether it's possible to do or not.

I am using:

  • iPad Pro 12.9 inch, 3rd generation
  • iPadOS 17.0.3
  • WD Easystore 5TB External USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive

Thank you for any insights!

Should formatting and/or partitioning of external storage devices ever be required, this must be performed using a separate computer - such as a Windows PC or Mac computer; iPad does not provide any facility to format an external storage device.

To be recognised by iPadOS, the attached USB storage device must be formatted to FAT, FAT32, exFAT, APFS or HFS+ with a single partition. Microsoft NTFS and other proprietary device formatting are not supported.
