Transferring photos from iMac to memory stick

Transfer seems limited to about a dozen photos then get "export operation failed to create a file". However, the photo will transfer into a new stick, together with several more before export again fails - even when attempting to transfer a photo which had previously transferred successfully to the original stick. Both sticks have plenty of space remaining. What is going wrong?

Some further diagnostic tests & info will help:

  • Try exporting multiple photos to a folder on your Desktop. Does that work?
  • Try copying multiple files (not photos) to a memory stick using the Finder. Does it work?
  • Are you using Photos or using iPhoto?
  • Are you trying to export Live Photos?
  • Are you using iCloud Photos?
  • What is the format of your memory sticks?

If those are 2 GB flash drives (a size that would be relatively small these days), they might be OK. If they were advertised as 2 TB (terabyte) flash drives, or if you bought them off a "marketplace" (rather than directly from some reputable retailer), you could be running into a fake flash drive scam.

Memory sticks: Febniscte 2GB USB read speed 13 Mb per sec. Connected directly into iMac using single standard USB adaptor cable. Copying by dragging photos singly from iPhoto into memory stick logo on desktop.

Connecting new memory stick allows several successful photo and video transfers before 'failure to create file' message appears. After this, attempts to transfer any additional photos gets same failure message. Connecting another new memory stick again allows several successful photo and video transfers (including previously "failed" ones) before 'failure to create file' message appears. Have tried this with four new sticks, with same result each time. Does this make sense?

Thank you for your suggestions

No problem with exporting to desktop folder but still will not export onwards to memory stick.

The same applies to document files

I’m using Photos (Sonama 14.0)

A few are live photos but most are not.  I have iCloud but these are direct from ‘Photos’ on my iMac

I haven’t formatted the new memory sticks but I’m having identical problem with my SunDisk sticks which have worked successfully for years.

I sense that it is my iMac that is now limiting how much I can export
