802.1X does not automatically connect when Mac is connected via Ethernet cable

This is a refresh of kaspmalf's 2018 post with the same title.

I have a 16 inch 2021 MacBook Pro, currently running MacOS Ventura 13.5.2, but this problem has been here since I got the computer almost a year ago.

The problem is that the wired connection (Network ⇒ USB 10/100/1000 LAN) stays in "Authenticating" state until I press "Disconnect" and then "Connect", at which point it connects in a few seconds ("Authenticated via EAP-TLS"). That will work all day as long as I don't unplug for too long.

My System Admins haven't seen this problem, but nearly everyone in the office uses the WiFi.

Any advice, for me or the admins, would be appreciated.

Finally got Sonoma 14.2.1 installed a week ago. No change in behavior: connecting to a 2021 M1 MacBook Pro requires manual disconnection (it's attempting to connect) and then re-connection of the 802.1X profile on the wired Ethernet connection.

Rebooting works, too.

IOW, AFAICT, it won't automatically connect over the wire unless it boots up that way.

Yes, thanks.

Sadly, this is not yet approved by our corporate IT, due to some app compatibility issues, IIUC, so I'm still on 13.6.2 for a few weeks more.

I see in the Sonoma 14 release notes that:

Apple devices now support connection to 802.1X networks using EAP-TLS with TLS 1.3 (EAP-TLS 1.3). EAP-TLS 1.3 further improves security and privacy by always providing forward secrecy, never disclosing the peer identity, and by mandating use of revocation checking when compared to EAP-TLS with earlier versions of TLS. ...and, though I doubt TLS 1.3 was my problem, at least this means engineers were working on the relevant driver, so it gives me a bit of hope.

This would imply the computer is enrolled in their Mobile Digital Management Service ( MDM ) like JAMF or some other similar Service

Computers that are managed by there types of services are maintained by the IT Department and or the MDM Service.

They Control ALL aspects of this computer including managing the Internet Connections used in this environment

I have the same problem also with Sonoma. The strange thing is that the WiFi which is authenticating in the same way works fine, it’s only on the usb Ethernet adapter where I have to use the connect button to get authenticated.

in my case the two networks, Ethernet and WiFi had been configured using the Apple Configurator

I was finally able to update to Ventura 13.6.2, and the behavior is unchanged.

As before, it stays like this: oh... images are't allowed?? 🧐

Well, the USB 10/100/1000 LAN connection stays at "Authenticating..." for minutes, at least (with the 802.1X selection at "Wired 802.1X")...

...until I press "Disconnect", then "Connect", and in two seconds it has authenticated and will stay so until I unplug.

For me is the same, I have Sonoma last version, I had tried with two different usb-c multi port adapters of different brands that have one Ethernet port and the behavior is the same, I have to manually click on connect to be able to authenticate using 802.1X

if I don’t do it, the connections stays always as unauthenticated, so remains on the guest network

Yes, it is true that the admins (techs) manage all that, but when I asked them, no one had heard of the 802.1x authentication (for wired ethernet) spinning forever (again, until I press the buttons to disconnect and then connect). It's not a visible issue for >99% of users.

I suppose that when I tire of the work-around, I'll push on our techs (admins) to contact Apple support to report the problem.

PS: problem persists on MacOS Sonoma 14.3.1.
