Mail app doesn't recognize Contact groups in Gmail using Mac, working fine on iPhone

For some months now when I try to send an email using gmail, from my iMac, it is not recognising the group name that I used to create the contact group in the Apple contact tool. It works perfectly on my iPhone.

On my iPhone>Contacts App> iCloud I can see the group listing and the option to send an email to the group but I don't see the same option on the iMac.

Thoughts? Thank you.

Hey there Vendella1948,

As you mentioned seeing the group name as an available option when wanting to send a group email from your iPhone, that shows the issue is between your Gmail account and your Mac. With that said, we'd like to learn more about what's happening, along with ruling out some basics:

  1. Have you already contacted Google Support to see if anything possibly on their end could possibly be affecting this on your Mac? Several companies have introduced new security features, and there may even be a setting on the account side of things as one possibility.
  2. When did this start, and does that group name still show when you look in the Contacts app on your Mac?
  3. If you have a compatible Mac model, the latest version is macOS 14.1. You can verify this by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then on ‘About This Mac’. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then update: Update macOS on Mac

Cheers!

Hey Vendella1948,

Make sure Contacts is enabled on the Google account by following the steps in this Google support article: Sync Google Contacts with your mobile device or computer. You may need to click the Computer tab to see instructions for the Mac.

If you didn't check for macOS updates, follow the steps in this article ensure you have the latest version for your Mac installed: Update macOS on Mac

If Contacts is already enabled or enabling it doesn't help, we recommend contacting Google support here: Gmail Help.

Take care.

Hi there,

Thanks for all of that. I have not contacted Google but I will. For now, I can say that when I create the Group Contact into Google Contacts using each gmail profile I use, gmail then recognises the address but I seem to have to do that on each device.

My IOS is macOS Monterey 12.7.1

This has been going on for at least a few months now. I do all of the app updates all the time. It's still a mystery why Apple contacts is no longer communicating with gmail.

I'll keep trying.
