iPhone frequently disconnects from WiFi when locked

Everyone in my family has an iPhone and is connected to our WiFi network. However, only 1 family member’s iPhone is experiencing an issue where whenever they unlock their iPhone the WiFi icon disappears and then quickly re-appears. To investigate this I checked the DHCP server logs from my router and found that their iPhone is sending between 30-50 DHCP Requests per day even when the phone is within WiFi range the entire day and the DHCP lease has not expired. I don’t see this same behavior on any of our other iPhones which are the same model (iPhone 14 Pro) and running the latest iOS.

I’ve seen a few posts on this forum claiming that this is expected behavior for the phone to disconnect when locked, however, this doesn’t explain why the behavior is only happening on one phone (even when all of the phones are left unplugged).

Does anyone know if there is a setting on the iPhone that is making this happen?

Hey there cammiller18,

We'd like to help by learning more about what's happening, along with ruling out some basics:

  1. When did this start to occur, and does the same thing happen when you test connecting to a different Wi-Fi network at another location?
  2. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart: Restart your iPhone
  3. If you have a compatible Mac model, the latest version is macOS 14.1. You can verify this by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then on ‘About This Mac’. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then update: Update macOS on Mac

Cheers!
