Don't "have permission" to open garage band

I went to open garage band on my computer but I got a pop-up saying that I didn't have access to this app. I own my MacBook, so I know I didn't add any restrictions on any apps. I tried uninstalling Garage Band and opening it again, but I don't even have the ability to redownload the app because I need my software update to be at 12.3. I currently have version 11.7 or something like that, but there is no option in my settings to update my MacBook to any higher version.

Another option is to delete the GarageBand app, as it seems you had tried. But then, when you go to the App Store, and click the button:

You should get the dialog window asking:

Download an older version of GarageBand?
The current version requires macOS X.Y or later, but you can download the last compatible version.

Make sure you choose 'Download' (ignore the "current version" info) and it should start downloading the right version, and when you click 'Open' should work just fine.

As an aside, "You don't have permission" is an incredibly lousy error message for saying that this app is not compatible with your OS version. It'd be worth it if Apple changed it.

Hi rileyholcomb,

Apple apps in the Mac App Store will always be the latest available version. As you are aware, GarageBand v. 10.4.8 requires macOS 12.3 or later. However, if you originally downloaded GarageBand with the Apple account you are using now, you may be able to re-download your original version from your purchase history following these steps:

How to redownload apps on Mac
1. Open the App Store on your Mac.
2. Click your name in the sidebar, then find the app that you want to download. If you don't see your name in the sidebar, click Sign In, sign in with your Apple ID, then click your photo in the sidebar.
3. If you use Family Sharing, you can see a family member's purchases when you go to Purchased by and choose their name.
4. Click the download button for the app.
