My iPod shows a cable and iTunes picture but won’t do anything

iPod won’t go beyond a page with a cable, arrow pointing towards iTunes circle and say’s support.Apple.com/iPod/restore

ipod touch 3 problem with restoring Hello, I bought a 3rd generation iPod. Unfortunately, when connected to the charger, the iTunes logo appears. After trying to reset in iTunes, I get this message: "This iPod was previously in DFU mode, but after restarting it is no longer in DFU mode. To put this iPod back in DFU mode, unplug it and put it back in DFU mode." When I did this, the same thing appears. 3uTools detects the device but does not show information about it. It is not possible to flash the software, neither in DFU mode or in recovery mode have already repaired many Apple devices, but now I have no idea what to do about it. No matter what I do, the iPod restore instructions don't work for me. There is always a timeout that occurs at about 5 minutes to go. Anybody else get past this? Using iTunes to attempt the restore. I can get to the restore screen, iTunes asks me the questions, I respond that I do want to reset the device, it shows that it's downloading the software and then it always times out. I've turned off everything in my Avast software that might be hanging it up (I think!) so I'm at a loss. We're doing the reset because my wife forgot the PIN number to log in on it.
