Headphone icon in status bar

As others have mentioned, I am seeing my headphone icon in my status bar and when going to my Bluetooth, it shows only that my Apple Watch is connected. This has never appeared before when my watch is connected. Is the icon now showing because of my watch? It’s annoying because I’d like to actually see that icon when I have either my headphones connected or a Bluetooth speaker. Anything I can do to fix this?
