iPhone 15 Screen Scratching Easily?

I've had my new iPhone since launch date and only just noticed a tiny scratch in the top right of the screen. It's not minor as I can feel it by running my nail along the screen and just very confused where it's come from. I always have the phone by itself in my pocket and haven't dropped it or anything similar at all.

Compare that to my previous iPhone 12 Pro Max which I never had a screen protector on and it's been dropped a handful of times with not a single scratch on the screen.

I don't have a screen protector atm so technically my fault, but I'm struggling to understand what could have scratched it so easily.

Ive had mine since launch, I also have had every iPhone ever, never wore a case or screen protector, I dropped those hundreds of times and never got scratches. My iPhone 15 Pro Max has more scratches on it in 1 month with 0 drops than any phone ive ever had in my life, my entire screen is deep scratches. it is terrible.

iPhone 15 screen gets scratched so easily. I visited apple maple view Centre Burlington. The technician ran a diagnostic and obviously they are not going to find anything. When I told the technician that it has got the worst screen quality. She was like showing attitude. “Neah, it’s the best phone ever and you can feel whatever you want”. I mean seriously, she wasn’t ready to take any feedback. Yes, it might be the best according to Apple but as a customer, i really feel that it got some serious issue.

My last upgrade, the iPhone XS, is doing better after 5,5 years than the 15 after a couple of months, no kidding. The 15's screen was already covered in minor scratches after 2 weeks of usage, and today I took it out of my suit pocket—a fat ugly scratch in the centre of the screen. How? You can't even resell this anymore. I wonder what will be left of the phone after a year.

Before upgrading I had my iPhone 7 for 5 years—not one scratch on the screen as bad as the ones I have now on my iPhone 15!

It’s only been 2 weeks.

Apple should be paying for screen glass replacements, this is a problem hundreds of users are having. It’s incredibly frustrating to pay nearly $1000 for a phone with inferior build quality than a phone released 8 generations ago.

I came on here looking for this. I bought my iPhone 15 pro max about a week ago and took it out the box 2 days ago. I’ve had it and my 13 in my bed doing transfers. I haven’t been out with it, haven’t dropped it or bumped it, haven’t had it close to any sharp objects BUT TODAY as I was cleaning the screen, I saw a scratch on it! It isn’t deep but I feel it with my fingernail. I’ve been going over and over in my head about how this could’ve happened. I’m starting to think I got the phone this way! I’m so sorry I didn’t open the box in store, I’m VERY disappointed!

It does not have inferior build quality; multiple reviewers have shown in scientific tests that the iPhone 15 family phone's screens are at least as scratch-resistant as those going back to the iPhone X.

Apple isn't going to pay to repair damage a user caused because they didn't install an inexpensive screen protector; that's considered cosmetic damage and is not covered by the standard Apple warranty.

My iphone 15 is 5 months old and i assure you nobody handles their mobile phone with as much care as i do mine. I do not like to use screen protectors or pouches because it just makes my phone look clumsier, heavier and i lose the natural feel of handling the phone. Today, i see a tiny scrartch on my iphone 15 and i cannot make out how or when it came about. i can swear it wasn't there yesterday. Never dropped, never placed in contact with any hard object. I just wonder what exactly may have scratched an iphone screen so easily and unnoticably. I've used 5,5s,6 and XS for years without protectors and without scratches even when they fall or come in contact with hard objects. I feel like the scratch on my iphone 15 is a mystery, because, what is this?

Older iPhones had displays that were slightly more scratch-resistant at the cost of being much more prone to cracking.

Since you can prevent scratches with a $30 screen protector but can't prevent cracking, and a new display is often $300 or more, you can see where the entire industry moved to slightly softer screens that were much less likely to crack.

This 2018 article from The Verge isn't even about iPhones (rather, Samsung), but explains the issue well:

The reason why has to do with both market demand and glass’ natural qualities. Since glass can’t truly be both extremely drop resistant and scratch resistant, Corning and other glass makers are forced to choose which of those two qualities to prioritize. For Corning, drop resistance takes precedence.

The Verge: Why your brand-new smartphone will scratch just as easily as your old one

If you're that careful about your device, add a screen protector now to prevent any further damage.

Screens have not become any more scratch-prone since the iPhone 8/X if not before.
