iPhone 15 Screen Scratching Easily?

I've had my new iPhone since launch date and only just noticed a tiny scratch in the top right of the screen. It's not minor as I can feel it by running my nail along the screen and just very confused where it's come from. I always have the phone by itself in my pocket and haven't dropped it or anything similar at all.

Compare that to my previous iPhone 12 Pro Max which I never had a screen protector on and it's been dropped a handful of times with not a single scratch on the screen.

I don't have a screen protector atm so technically my fault, but I'm struggling to understand what could have scratched it so easily.

Ive had mine since launch, I also have had every iPhone ever, never wore a case or screen protector, I dropped those hundreds of times and never got scratches. My iPhone 15 Pro Max has more scratches on it in 1 month with 0 drops than any phone ive ever had in my life, my entire screen is deep scratches. it is terrible.

It’s just been a month I bought 15pro max , n started using it since past just 20 days , today it fell for the first time and had few scratches on it so weird , I have used 12 pro max , and in 3 years of usage it had fallen several times , I had used it roughly but never had any complaints, but iPhone15 pro max , is quite delicate, and hangs while I am typing , weird it’s new still hangs and works slow

I’ve owned at least every-other-year’s iPhone release since the iPhone 3GS. Never used a case or a screen protector.

I’ve just noticed a scratch around 1 cm long towards the top center, the scratch is significantly deeper than I’ve had on any previous iPhone.

Small, hairline scratches were also already present but that is normal from my experience (though typically not so early-on in ownership).

No event to my knowledge would have caused this scratch today, so I searched, landed here and was surprised to find others with the same issues.

The scratch is deep and bothers me to the point where I’m considering paying the insurance deductible for a screen replacement claim.

Something obviously caused the scratch, it's just that you may not have noticed what if it was caused by putting it into or removing it from a pocket.

Again, the best way to avoid this is to use a screen protector; it's cheap insurance and they work well, and if the protector is damaged you can replace just it.

Independent tests have shown the screen is no more scratch-prone than past iPhones since at least the X.

I went to Apple Store Edinburgh showed them thread line scratches all over screen . The person looking at it went to Manager of store came back and said they weren’t willing to put new screen front on in other words as if I had made scratches. If only there was a way this 80 year old woman (me) could have recorded me with my new phone. Didn’t go out with it. Waited on screen protector in post then changed my mind and journeyed to store. Ended up I just paid there and then for new screen. Cost me over £200. They did it within an hour, which shows they could have easily done it free. I even bought Apple care but seemingly this doesn’t cover it. I have had iPhones iPads iMac since first came out. Never a scratch on previous iPhones. I am sure this will be found out to be a flaw.

The same here and for my friend. We both have the iPhone 15 Pro and within weeks, we each feel small scratches. I had already taken mine to have the camera lens replaced due to dust somehow entering the enclosure days after purchase. Coming from an XR, it is a decent upgrade, but the XR, until I traded it in, never had a scratch!

"They" didn't do anything.

You used it without a screen protector in place, and as a result you scratched your screen.

I don't care what happened with your 12; independent scientific tests have shown the 15 Pro Max's screen to be just as robust if not more so.

Most people that didn't immediately apply a screen protector would apply one after their first scratch.

You can still protect against further scratches by applying a screen protector now.

Not exactly true, but I looked it up. Since the iPhone 12 they have been using "Ceramic Shield". Before that was the Gorilla Glass varients, which use a different process. There are many different glass processes, and While they all end up in a similar place on Mohs hardness scale, they behave differently. Some are more resistant light scratches, but will break with different sorts of impact, etc...

My previous phones from Apple and Samsung were older which is likely why I am noticing different behaviors. I wonder how many others that are noticing the difference in behavior are coming from a Gorilla glass model.

However, it is true that having a screen protector will guard against these light everyday scratches.

That's actually incorrect; what the Mohs hardness scale measures is resistance to scratching by various materials, light or deep.

If one material was more likely to scratch, it would be a different Mohs hardness.

Yes, you are correct. I only see reports with the whole number value, and while statements declare it is harder, the old and new screen numbers are reported at 6. For my situation, I am still curious how 3 weeks of typical usage resulted in more scratches than 6 years with some serious accidents and drops. Putting in a coat pocket without keys can in no way compare to multiple out-of-pocket drops of the old phone. There is always the possibility of a batch-based defect.

By the way, do you have a screen protector that you have good success with while using a case? I've found the glass ones just end up cracking very easily, and the hydrogel ones always seem to bubble up for me when I put the phone into the case.
