Apple Watch battery drains super fast after 10.1 update.

Series 7 Apple Watch. After 10.1 update my battery only lasts a few hours. I can literally watch the percentage go down. Rebooted the watch. Shut off background app refresh after advised by a friend. Still drains ridiculously fast. It’s essentially useless now. I’m out of ideas. Anyone else have this problem? This is crazy.

My watch used to last two days, even with me running an hour a day. I no longer run and now it drains faster. I have to put it on the charger overnight and again mid-day. Normally, it takes about an hour to charge. But there are days that it takes up to five hours to hit 100%. I haven’t added anything or changed any settings since I got it almost two years ago.

That’s what I thought. Just got off chat and phone support with Apple regarding this issue on my series 6. Was told it might take 72 hours or so to resolve after update and reset wound be next step if not resolved. They were very fast to respond. I am not going through the process of deleting apps like many have suggested. That does not address the issue and is only temporary mitigation. I’m confident Apple will address the issue.

I had it erased, sent in to remove the beta software on the chip, and it worked for a day. Then the prompt to update it was there and installed overnight, caused the issue all over again. It’s not the apps, it’s the update itself. The update to fix 10.1 is in the works and apparently I was not told that the update was the issue until yesterday.

I have series 6. Same problem with the battery draining really quickly. It wouldn’t even charge to 100% overnight on the charger. My watch was perfectly fine prior to the update and now it is basically useless. I can’t even wear it for half an hour. I am happy to see that I’m not the only one with this problem because I thought my watch was broken.

My series 5 was lasting about 15 hours a day. After update, I am lucky to get 10-12. I have worn it today for an hour and it is already down 10%. I just did a support call with Apple. They ran the diagnostics test which on my end wouldn’t even go past “initiating” and I ended it to go back to chatting with the tech since nothing was happening. I was told that they could see the report and it was fine. Of course it came back that my battery needed replaced and no this isn’t covered. I told the tech that it sure is funny that after an update that Apple pushes out, my battery all the sudden needs to be replaced. They said it was a coincidence. Big $100 coincidence!! I am awaiting a phone call with a senior advisor. Not expecting it to go anywhere but I am going to try. This is frustrating! My phone is also dying quickly since the update. I’m sure that is another expensive coincidence.

I have done all the “suggestions”. No 3rd party apps, background app refresh off, brightness turned down…

Same issues for me after installing 10.1. Apple ran diagnostics on my Apple Series 6 - and found nothing wrong. They then sent me to the Apple Store to do more troubleshooting - the Apple Genius did a clean Factory Install which seemed to help - and (what I thought) fixed the issue. Then I got home an hour later and it the watch was dead. Others in this thread have reported that removing the Moby Face app solved the issue - there could be other 3rd party apps that have yet to be updated causing this too. I've now uninstalled a couple things (including the Moby Face app). Here's hoping, fingers crossed.

The thing that bothers me with all of the advice to remove 3rd party apps as that is the problem...seems like most, if not all of us didn't have this problem UNTIL the update to 10.1. Thus, how can the issue be the 3rd party apps? Clearly something changed in 10.1 from 10.0 that caused this excess battery drain. To blame the 3rd party apps seems like a copout.

The most common thing I'm seeing is the MobyFace app. My guess would be that the developer, who, like everyone else, had access to the beta version of watchOS 10, didn't bother to ensure that their app was updated. Apple can't force a developer to do that. Smaller and/or less reputable developers sometimes can't or won't keep up.

I have numerous third-party apps on my Watch 7 which has a maximum battery capacity of 85% so, not as young as it used to be. I have no difficulties. I get about 24 hours with 10-15% left, sometimes more. The difference may be that the third-party apps I have are properly written for watchOS 10.

I suggest you delete all of your third-party apps. Then, add them back a couple at a time each day. That way, when your battery life starts draining rapidly, you'll be able to to tell which one is the problem.

plainly it is the interaction between the spps and the 10.1 update.
The apps may have violated the API or Apple changed them. Either way Apple needs to acknowledge the issue and FIX it

Apple provides access to beta builds specifically so that developers can make sure their apps still work or can make any required updates. But Apple cannot force developers to update their apps.

Exactly same here. I have the "normal" (not fast charge) puck as a backup in my "man cave". connected yesterday at 32%. After about 45 minutes went to check on the watch.... 15%. Had to run it into the house and put it on the fast charger by my bed. Took almost an hour only, but charged to 100%. Could have cooked breakfast on it.

Disabled cellular. No change. Turned it back on after about an hour

Disabled WIFI: No change. Turned it back on after about an hour

Turned off things I don't need on the watch, like photos, music, workout and a few other things. Not even a little bit of a change.

Soon as it's done charging (4.5 hours into the day, and down to 10%), I'll turn off (I guess that's the same as delete) MOBYFACE and see if that makes a difference.

I tried what you posted and it worked for me too. I decided to try adding back apps so I added non-Apple apps back on and within 10 mins, my battery percentage dropped by 10% (from 100%). So I decided to delete them again starting with MobyFox. I checked my battery 10 mins later, and it had not changed. Gave it another 10 mins, and the battery still had not changed. Voila! MobyFox was the cause for the rapid power drain.

I checked the MobyFox app on the App Store and it has not been updated for 3 weeks (as of today's date 11/1/2023). I wrote a review explaining my testing. Hopefully they'll release a software update very soon. For now, I'm not re-installing MobyFox until there's an update.
