Apple Watch battery drains super fast after 10.1 update.

Series 7 Apple Watch. After 10.1 update my battery only lasts a few hours. I can literally watch the percentage go down. Rebooted the watch. Shut off background app refresh after advised by a friend. Still drains ridiculously fast. It’s essentially useless now. I’m out of ideas. Anyone else have this problem? This is crazy.

My watch used to last two days, even with me running an hour a day. I no longer run and now it drains faster. I have to put it on the charger overnight and again mid-day. Normally, it takes about an hour to charge. But there are days that it takes up to five hours to hit 100%. I haven’t added anything or changed any settings since I got it almost two years ago.

These software update issues are very reminiscent of the issues with Windows way back in the day when Windows NT was released, so it's not a new thing occurring here. Back then, whenever new software was installed on a Windows NT Server, the latest Service Pack had to be reinstalled to ensure that new software did not "break" anything within the environment. Re-installing the SP ensured that all current library files would take precedent over the new software installed in case that software did not include the new library files.

MobyFox just needs to update the app so all needed library files are current.

Just to update you all. This may be relevant to some but those with MobyFace app on their watch remove it from the watch turn off and on and this should fix it. It’s done it for us. Those who don’t have it. Maybe look at apps that have and haven’t received an update recently and delete those that haven’t and hopefully that will work. Hope this works for you all but like I said MobyFace is our culprit and may be yours

Same problem. Watch lasts 3 hours. Support was a total joke. They said even though they can see the battery is having issues, they won’t replace it because they magical diagnostic tools say everything is fine. I’m livid. Had the watch 3 weeks at the start of the problem and can’t get my money back. 6 inept Apple support techs in 1 day. Watch lasted almost 3 days before the latest patch. Apple has gone way downhill.

So glad I looked at this when I googled Apple Watch drain, didn’t know it was because of the new update. I just took off the MobyFace app off the watch but I still have ESPN and Shazam on there, I’m hopeful that the battery doesn’t drain faster than usual with these two still on there. But I do agree that apple should have said something about this when they found out that there was a problem with the new update

Thanks. I have removed all third party apps and battery still drains too fast. The only way I can get 8 to 10 hours between charges is by deploying draconian measures, which I have posted elsewhere. I have even found problems with Apple apps not working correctly, such as Apple's heart rate monitor app, Apple Workout app, and Fitness+ integration.

Yeah, people keep saying to delete the MobyFace app. So I unpaired and repaired my watch. When it was loading apps, I selected to not install MobyFace but IT DID IT ANYWAYS! When I select it to not show it on my watch, the green slider is greyed out and I can’t swipe it in list mode and there’s no x when I get it to jiggle. WHAT THE HECK!!!!

Thanks for the tip. I removed my Moby Face app yesterday. I then turn my watch off for 15 seconds and then put it back on. It is no longer getting overheated while charging and is holding a charge now. I ended up deleting a few other 3rd party apps that I realized I had but don’t use my watch for so it was just wasting storage. My watch 100% at 1:53pm yesterday and was 66% when I went to bed around 10:30pm. So he definitely is better. Again thanks for the tip.

I see that people are saying to delete 3rd party apps to make it work. That doesn’t seem like a good fix. We should be able to use that apps we want. Hopefully 10.2 will come out and fix the problem soon.

A number of people have discovered that a particular 3rd party app is the source of their problem. Removing it seems to solve it. That doesn't mean that they can't use any 3rd party apps, just not that one until it gets updated. So, even if you don't have MobyFace installed, it's worth removing all of the third-party apps and seeing if your battery life goes back to normal. If it doesn't, start adding the third-party apps back a couple at a time. If the battery life suddenly goes haywire again, you'll know it was one of the most recently added apps and you can remove only those.

Other people report that they don't have third-party apps and are still having issues. That highlights something important: the same symptoms don't always have the same cause.

I called Apple. They ran diagnostics. Told me to take it in for service. I get there and was told they cannot service the watch due to the battery health being above 80%, unless I want to pay $70-350. The tech was baffled. He went to the back and was gone a long time. He talked to other techs and they said there was a LOT of chatter online about the last update and the Moby Face app killing the watch. He sent me home with a dead watch and told me to call corporate and complain. The real nugget was when he said Moby Face as I use their watch faces sometimes. Sure enough removing that app from my watch fixed the battery issue! Seems Apple is trying to avoid people sending their watches in for service when it’s actually software… which makes sense.

Like many others I took MobyFace off my phone and now my watch holds charge and performs normally, with all the other 3rd party apps I was using installed. MobyFox has admitted they know their app doesn't work right with 10.1 (they aren't the only one as there are some others, but theirs seems to be affecting a lot of folks in this discussion) and are working with Apple to figure it out. Hopefully when they get it fixed and I reinstall the app, I won't have to reload all the watch faces again since I have several watch bands.
