Apple Watch battery drains super fast after 10.1 update.

Series 7 Apple Watch. After 10.1 update my battery only lasts a few hours. I can literally watch the percentage go down. Rebooted the watch. Shut off background app refresh after advised by a friend. Still drains ridiculously fast. It’s essentially useless now. I’m out of ideas. Anyone else have this problem? This is crazy.

My watch used to last two days, even with me running an hour a day. I no longer run and now it drains faster. I have to put it on the charger overnight and again mid-day. Normally, it takes about an hour to charge. But there are days that it takes up to five hours to hit 100%. I haven’t added anything or changed any settings since I got it almost two years ago.

Agree. Do not download new update. My watch battery was draining fast on iOS. 10 and went through whole thing with apple including trading in my series 6 watch for an SE. then it spontaneously stopped draining after I updated apps on my phone. Now I just downloaded and installed the 10.1 update and it’s draining again. Come on Apple this has happened with iOS updates before-shouldn’t it be fixed by now?

Someone told me that 3 party apps have restricted background activity. But he mentioned about "side effect". He can't tell anything more because he is saying about theory. Anyway I think that 3 party apps can trigger something like location etc and even If you uninstall them this process is still running and drains your battery. So yes maybe it is apple fault but for customer it doesn't matter. Draining is draining. Check macrumors forum

Sorry, to be clear, 10.1 didn’t cause the problem. 10.1.1 did when I updated it last night. This is probably the fourth or fifth time it’s happened with the Apple Watch seven. I finally even got Apple to replace the watch back in February, but then it only took another update or two to cause more problems. This never happens with the phone, but it seems to happen frequently with the watch. I’m almost afraid to update it. I can’t believe that a 2 trillion dollar company whose products cost more than anyone else’s can’t seem to produce an update that doesn’t cause this many problems. I don’t know what the point of a Beta is if the final product doesn’t work properly.

Yes, but do you think you should have to do that or advice from the $2 trillion company? My watch cost $800. I don’t think I should have to reset it just because they issued an update. Especially not have to reset it to new so that I have to put all the settings in again. Are they going to pay me for my time?

Apparently part of the problem is that a lot of things are going on in the background. I had to go through two complete charge cycles until the problem went away. After it charged for the second time to 100%, it worked OK. If that doesn’t work, you can try impairing and then pairing it as a new watch. If that fixes the problem then you can generally restore from a back up after that so that you don’t have to set it up again from scratch. I still think this is ridiculous from $2 trillion company whose main business is tech. It seems like they’re doing it on purpose to kill your battery so that you want to buy a new watch. Lithium I am batteries can only be charged through so many cycles. So every time they cause a problem like this, they are wearing down your watch battery. You can’t have the battery replaced for around $90, but it shouldn’t be because the tech company supporting their own product is the one ruining your battery. Apple has still never admit it this and that’s why I think there should be a class action suit against them for this. I could see if this happened once, but this is very common.

As I said previously. Someone explained to me that third party apps have restricted access to background activity. Anyway I think that they can trigger some apple's background process. That also explain why even if someone doesn't have any third party app problem can occurs. Just because it is all about apple's process at background. Still we don't know what it is. Apple doesn't want to show us what drains battery the most. They could add same info about battery we have on iPhones. Is it so hard?

I am wondering what exactly happened that your two cycles works. It had to reset something. But what ?!?! \

I've also read that some people had a problem during day one. Then it backed to normal and suddenly again draining in day 3/4. Unbelievable.

Same here 10.1.1 made the battery drain worse than 10.1. Both are worse than watchOS 9. Apple watchOS 10.x.x is some of the most unstable and unreliable software I have ever seen from Apple in decades. Reminds me of the old days of windows 98. The only thing I have been able to do to get overnight performance then 14 hours during the day (charging twice per day), is to remove all 3rd party apps, delete all deletable apple apps that are not critical to my use, disable background refresh, get rid of Apple weather and Apple world clock apps and turn off location services. By the way, my battery capacity is 84%, my watch passes all Apple diagnostics (twice now) and Apple will only replace the battery for a fee of $299 (because the battery has over 80% capacity). Apple absolutely claims not have the ability to roll my watch back to watchOS 9.6.3. THIS IS NOT what made Apple a multi-trillion dollar company that people trusted.

Try a couple of charge cycles and if that doesn’t work, then try impairing and then pairing the watch again as a new watch. There’s a good chance that will help. There are a lot of little things going on in the background after an update, so that’s why you see the severe battery drain Which can take a couple of charge cycles until all extra background processes stop.

Series 8 watch. Battery died within a few hours after 10.1.1 update and continued to die for six days. Did all the troubleshooting listed here (no Mobyface on my watch, unpaired/paired, turned off background updates, etc). Finally did the chat thing with Apple and they ran the analytics and said "software appears OK". Scheduled a call. But before the call (this am) and just after the support chat the battery came back and now seems to be ok (60% after 14 hours). I told the Apple call support person of my troubles but not sure if that goes anywhere. Also sent to Apple Feedback. The same thing happened with the 10.1 update but battery drain was gone after three days. Was it the "analytics" test that fixed it? Or just a coincidence? Really a big fail for Apple. They should at least make this problem clear to customers and save us all a lot of trouble (yes, I've told them).

So very tired of watchOS 10. Bought a Garmin smart watch to compare. After a week of using the Garmin, I think Apple Watch is in trouble. The Garmin watch has battery life measured in weeks, NOT HOURS. Garmin interfaces quite well with my iPhone. Menu designs and user experience is intuitive. Loved my Apple Watch on watchOS 9.6.3, but watchOS 10 is dead on arrival.
