Movie file imported can't be opened

I'm running Big Sur 11.6.4. I have three video files on my Nikon D 5100. One of the files imports correctly. The other two appear to import correctly, but a question mark shows up and the message is the file is missing. I've tried importing them twice with the same result. it's been oolong since I've done this I can figure out how to access the camera from my computer or how to play the file on my camera. The icons do show a video image when I go to import. Thanks for any assistance.

It looks like the import is not completing. That could be caused by disconnecting or shutting off the camera before the import completes. Other causes could be incompatible video format, corruption of the video file, malfunction of the camera, or a glitch in iMovie.

To rule out an issue with an iMovie preference, delete preferences by opening iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and selecting to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new blank library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. Now see if you can import.

If deleting preferences doesn't cure the issue, try importing in a different way to rule out the other possible causes of the problem. Try using the Image Capture app on your Mac to import to your desktop rather than directly into iMovie. Or, you can try importing into the QuickTimePlayer app on your Mac.

Thanks....I deleted the preferences and that apparently is not the issue.

I'm trying to come up with another way of importing the files. When I plug my camera in with a USB connection I cannot see the camera on the desktop. I haven't done this is so long I can't remember how I did it, but I've never had a problem importing a video. I tried downloading the latest Nikon transfer software, but it won't work on my operating system and I don't want to incur all the problems that would result from that update. My laptop has newer software, but I haven't gotten the transfer to work yet. I have yet to try the Quicktime route. Thanks for your efforts
