Airpods Max won't connect to Lenovo laptop

I have recently bought a new Lenovo laptop, all is great but my Airpods Max are showing as connected via bluetooth, but they won't work. I feel like I have literally tried everything. My regular airpods work fine, the Airpods Max connect to other laptops. Could it be that the two devices are simply not compatible? Any help appreciated.

How do I pair my old airpods to new MacBook Air Laptop consistently? Sometime there is pairing and sometimes it won't. Please explain if anyone has issues pairing airpods to MacBook Air laptop after Bluetooth is turned on and Apple I-phone bluetooth is turned off?
