Airport Time Capsule says it's connected but will no longer backup

I have been using my airport capsule for years. my last backup was successfully done a little over a week ago. When I try to backup now it gives me an error saying it's either not connected to the same network or it's not powered on. Neither of those are true as I've verified both are connected and connected to the same network. The airport device is hard wired into our modem which also serves as a router. The airport is also making it's own network but even when I try to connect my wifi to that network I get the same error.

Open any Finder window on your Mac and look for the name of the Time Capsule under the Locations heading on the left panel of the Finder window. In the example below, you can see that the name of my Time Capsule is TC.

Does the Time Capsule appear when you run this check?

If yes, the Time Capsule is at least connected to the network as a device, but the hard drive may have possibly failed, or the backup file may have become corrupted.

If the Time Capsule does not even appear under the Locations heading in the Finder window, then the Time Capsule is not connected to the network provided by your modem.

Post back on your results, so we will know what steps to suggest next.
