For the past 3 days there has been an alert on my settings which says I need to update my payment details. I can’t get past it. I telephoned Apple support and even they didn’t rectify it. Has my phone been hacked or compromised somehow?

Your iPhone is not hacked or compromised, iPhones are really difficult to hack. You must update your payment information. See this on how to do that

That they are there doesn't mean that you don't have to update them. Most of the times there is something wrong with your card data or the card is (almost)expired
I get what you are saying but my payment details are there, I can see them!!!
