USB C Headphone lead on iPhone 15 SOLVED (sort of)

More problems with the way Apple have designed the USB C port.

I bought the official Apple USB C headphone lead but it didn't work. I plugged in my Bang & Olufsen wired headphones and the music continued to come out of the iPhone 15 Pro speakers.

I found many postings about failed car connection with Apple Car Play that were solved by playing one song through Apple Music.

So this evening I connected the official Apple USB C - Headphone Lead to an old Apple Ear Phone lead from an elderly iPod. Then Connected the USB C end to the iPhone 15 Pro. The phone asked if I was trying to connect a headphone so I pressed yes. Then I opened Apple Music and played a song and it came through the earpiece!

What on earth is going on?

This is the correct solution for getting phone audio out of the USBC. You are basically telling the iPhone that your accessory is a set of wired headphones. - From Tanmaynehete

To fix this issue follow below steps

go to

sound & haptic

>>. Head phone safety

>> USB audio accessories >>

1st click on forget all USB Accesories

then enable connected to headphones option.

I had the same problem with a 3rd party adapter, audio would not be directed to headphones. Returned 3rd party adapter and bought official Apple adapter thinking this would solve my problem. When I used the Apple adapter same issue, no awareness on my 15 Pro that there were headphones connected and only audio on the phone (using Apple music). Tried leaving everything attached via usb c to headphone jack and restarted the 15 Pro. Upon restarting I got the message asking if there were headphones attached. I said yes and now I get audio on the headphones. I guess the 15 Pro needed a restart to "see" the headphones. This might be a solution for some.

I finally found the solution on my iPhone 15 pro. Try this out:

-Settings

-Accessibility

-Audio & Visual

-Headphone accommodations (top option)

-Turn on and adjust to your liking

…And boom plugged in my $5 generic usb-c to 3.5 headphone jack from Amazon. The message “do you want to use headphones” came up.

Been working ever since.. Hope it works for anybody else trying the same.

I solved this issue with a rather interesting approach. I have a V-Moda Crossfade M-100 Master that I wanted to connect to my iPhone 15 Pro Max using a standard Apple USB-C to 3.5 mm audio adapter. My phone screen was locked when I plugged the USB-C adapter + headphones into the phone and a notification popped up saying "Trying to connect an accessory" or something. I lost this prompt when I got an incoming call and the iPhone routed the call directly through the phone audio bypassing the headphones + mic setup.

I restarted my phone, connected the same thing and expected to see the prompt but did not. I had to trick the phone into thinking I was doing this afresh, so I pulled the 3.5 mm audio out and slid it in halfway into the adapter till I could hear the all too familiar audio noise in the headphones, and the notification popped up again. This time I selected "Yes" and audio + microphone came through. The setup works flawlessly now.

I hope this works for everyone who has an issue as well. Thanks!

P.S: My headset comes with a microphone cable, and a plain audio cable with 3 bands.

This is spot-on. I play music through my iphone into a mixer during gigs to play music for the house while my band takes a break. No problem with a lightning dongle to 3.5mm cable into my mixer for years. then bought an iphone 15 and it uses a USB C, so I bought the Apple dongle to connect and now the mixer won't recognize the 3.5 mm cable. Turns out that I have to loosely connect the 3.5 to my PA mixer, but tightly connect it to the phone dongle. It works, but if the cable gets bumped while playing music, I am sure it will break up or disconnect the sound. I am using a 2-ring 3.5 mm cable. Sheesh....

I’m having the same issue trying to figure out why my Meze 99’s won’t work with the usb-c to headphone adapter, but my old Apple wired earbuds work flawlessly every time.

I got the Meze 99’s to work only once by taking your suggestion and playing a song in the native Apple Music app. I unplugged the 99’s and haven’t been able to get sound out of them again, even by restarting the phone.

So weird and frustrating.
