Macbook Pro 2019 no keyboard backlight options in System Preferences

My MacBook Pro 2019 no longer displays any keyboard backlight options in System Preferences. The keyboard lights up briefly at the login screen then turns off. I have no keyboard backlight options in System Preferences, they are missing. The backlight-keys on the Touch Bar have no effect. Keyboard brightness slider in the the tool bar returns to 0 brightness after trying to slide over. Touch bar keys are illuminated.

MacBook Pro 2019 - running Sonoma 14.0

Resetting SMC and PRAM does not work.

Safe mode does not change the problem. Left it booted in safe mode for

over 2 hours -- no change.

This seems like an issue with the O.S. Keyboard lighting works at login however the

keyboard lighting options are simply missing in the settings.

You can try reinstalling macOS.

This will have no effect on your user account(s), preferences/settings or data. It will simply lay a fresh copy of the OS onto the drive, replacing any OS files that may be somehow corrupted.

Restart the Mac in Recovery, then select the Reinstall macOS application on the Recovery window.

You should not erase, format, partition or otherwise muck about with Disk Utility for this exercise.
