Good afternoon, how do I got about filing a claim for a stolen iPhone that isn’t covered with Apple care

I am currently on my daughters iPhone because my iPhone 12 Pro Max has been stolen. I do not have Apple care so what would my options be on replacing it?

iPhone 12 Pro Max, iOS 16

Without AppleCare+ with theft and loss protection, there is no insurance from Apple on it.

Check your homeowners/renters insurance policy, they may cover this. Otherwise you are looking at purchasing a new phone.

In addition to marking the phone as Lost, you can

  • Report the theft to the police. They're not going to pay you to replace it, but you may need a police report if you have homeowner's/renter's insurance that covers this loss, and you are planning to make a claim.

  • Report the theft to your phone company (carrier). Some carriers will put the IMEIs (identifiers) of stolen cellular phones onto a "blacklist" – so that they, and any other phone company with whom they share their "blacklists", will never provide cellular voice, text message, or data service to the stolen phone ever again.

Aside: If your iPhone was stolen, you may want to mark your iPhone as Lost, and to consider remotely erasing it. The purpose of this is to trigger Activation Lock and to make your phone a useless "brick" to the thieves. While odds are that you'll never get your phone back, if thieves know that stolen iPhones are likely to turn into "bricks", that reduces their incentive to steal iPhones in the first place. (A similar approach worked well for car stereos.)

Do not carry out the step about removing your iPhone from the list of devices that are associated with your Apple ID, unless you want to clear the Activation Lock and let the thieves "make your iPhone their own."

If you get messages from "Apple Support" or the like, claiming to want to reunite you with your iPhone, don't bite. Those are not from Apple Support, but "phishing" messages from criminals, who want you to

  • Release the Activation Lock
  • Give them the information they need to release the Activation Lock
  • Give them the information they need to scam you in other ways
