Removing Mouse Acceleration OSX

I'm interested to know how mac OSX mouse acceleration can be DISABLED or CHANGED. I'm using OSX Snow Leapord 10.6.4.

The default axis acceleration is disgusting and makes me nauseous. To be honest I can't believe such a simple thing was so badly F'd up.

Any help is appreciated =]

WOW! Some people in this thread actually defending Mouse acceleration in mac? the ****, people have too much sparetime.

If a person likes the windows likeish acceleration more than the apple one or none at all(which most preff), what is the big problem then? apple is moving into being ALSO a gaming machine.. anyone who play games would know that the acceleration in mac or even windows dont work very well with games, specially in games you have to have some accurate mouse movements like a FPS game.

RC may I say, it is a pleasure to to discuss something with someone who knows what the &%$^@$% they r talking about and is cordial about it whether he disagrees or not. We need more of u in all forums.

Actually as I said way earlier, I knew the actual ballstics and curves architecture just by what was happening, lol... I was talking about how much more "acceleration" (or is it the "jerk", no pun intended!) and "exponential" components the mac mouse motion had than Windows, and unless u have had thousands of reps or grew up with it, it is highly unnatural for a near linear motion to all of a sudden move exponentially. A lot of beef from ex-PC users is, it probably costs less than 2-3 man hours for a programmer at Apple to implement the feature, hence, my past statement about something like arrogant ignoramuses or something.

Btw, remember how you showed me that link with the PC mouse movement's being "less accurate" than the Mac's when you move it in circles etc...? Well I just decided to test on my Mac, and lo' and behold, when I twirled the cursor in about 2-3 inch diameter circles from the very top of the screen about 50 times, guess what happened? The cursor ends up at the bottom of my screen. Of course my wrist was fixed on my pad, didnt move 1mm from the original spot.

L O L ... thanks Apple, for your "superior product."

Oh and my Mac Mail just crashed on me today, no warning, in the middle of an email composition... it saved most, I lost about 2 sentences. Wait, has "Mac" and "crashed" ever been used in the same sentence before? (Not sure if I stated, just in case someone wants to make a wise crack on RAM shortage blah blah, I have been an IT pro for a while and one of my fellow IT guys called this Mac a "supercomputer." I kinda laughed at that (not sure if he were joking or not), but yes, it is one of the highest end Macs money can buy with all the toppings... lucky me huh)

These are the reasons PC users make fun of Macs, or Mac diehards, who's constant claim to fame is Macs never crash, never get viruses, are just, "so much better." Ok. Just say "prettier" and I'll give u that, in MOST cases. Frankly, I love the PC's I build with the cool windows and shiny RAM with jagged heat sinks and blue neon lights, etc... that looks pretty nice to me.

BUT, I just upgraded to the OS X Mountain Lion, v10.8.1 (4+) and I have to tell you, the motion is MUCH better, well sorry, "better." It moves much more "predictably" and even the scroll wheel is mitigated and actually much smoother, i.e., small movements seem linear, but when you flick real fast, it goes faster but on a much shallower curve, which is fine. The one thing that still annoys me more than a PC is (I now have both again, and will be transferring to the PC soon, altho its a Dell.... I might as well just stab myself in the eyeballs) that the Mac mouse movement after this upgrade is fine except I still feel some, how do u say, "softness"? Like a real slight lag that you cant really describe... Like a car having traction control or something, where on the PC it just seems like it does whatever way I move it? Sorry, I cant explain it better than that, all I know is, it is still more annoying but MUCH improved.

Whatever the case, my point now is, unless you are totally inert to mouse curves, shouldnt the people using the old Mac OS version now be ****** that the mouse curve is different??? I only ask because some "Mac diehards" again claimed that the mouse curve hasnt changed since the first Mac. Really, how do you argue with that with someone who has used the IIe, Classic, Power Mac, and now the Mac Pro? Its not like I have ONLY used a PC my whole life... I wish people would just tell the truth, thats all.

And visa versa. A lot of it comes from the expectation that the two platforms should be about the same, that one or the other implements stuff the only truly correct way & the other does it in some laughably obvious inferior one.

But of course it isn't really like that. One platform sources its two most critical elements (the hardware & the OS) from different manufacturers; the other from just one. One platform is available only on a limited range of generally very high quality devices; the other on just about everything imaginable, from the very shoddily constructed & poorly designed on up to whatever top end products there is an appreciable market for.

Each has advantages & disadvantages. More to the point, they dictate that things be done differently on each platform to maximize its advantages & minimize its disadvantages, often in ways not very obvious to end users. (For instance, the two use fundamentally different display model abstractions -- there is no direct equivalent for Microsoft's "mickey" in the OS X one because the model isn't based on pixels.)

So basically, if you don't take the differences into account, no matter which platform you prefer you leave yourself open to ridicule if you tout its advantages & ignore its disadvantages. When people on both sides do that, the debates quickly become ludicrous, with no hope of resolving anything to anybody's satisfaction.

The only thing I can think of more ludicrous than that is getting in the middle of those debates, where both sides can attack you with equal intensity … which is why I think I will give this topic a rest for a while. 😉

Ok, now u r just picking and choosing from my posts to respond to. I was referring to all the Mac users I have encountered, which have been pretty much every single one them, who states that the Mac is better because it "never crashes" and "never get malware." I am pretty sure I mentioned this before. These are both false statements from my personal expereince, which makes those statements look more idiotic.

PC users never claim that we dont get infected or PC's are anything absolute. It is almost like the difference between am old communist Apple/Mac where everything is controlled and people are braiwashed and they like it, lol. PC has the freedom to do whatever, but comes with more corruption and variations in cost, features, etc....

I consider myself a high end user who pretty much does everything from highest end gaming, video work, professional graphic/web design work, office work, and everything in between. I consider myself a pretty anal user as well, where the user experience has to be meticulous or else I get annoyed very easily. I am sure I admitted that a few years ago when I used the Mac for Photoshop almost exclusively, I cant remember exactly why but the Mac was much more pleasing than use the PC I had right next to it. And for some more abstract reasons today, I feel even less so, that PC, with their better hi-res displays, there is hardly any difference between the Mac and PC even in Photoshop work, and in fact, with the mouse "problem" in Mac, there is a clear winner for me here.

If Mac users would stop with the "Macs are more advanced, just better built, more beautiful, and are just better machines, therefore it is superior to PC's" crap, I would not be reponding this way either. If people are happy with their Macs, great... just dont spread lies.

Its easy to fix. Just go to your system pref and mouse setting and turn the tracking speed right down. Get a mouse were you can change the dpi from the firmware and change it to whatever speed suits you. If you're a gamer and im guessing a lot of the people who are having this issue are then you are more than likely to have a gaming mouse, most of these mice have this setting.

Fix it like that for now and sit back and wait until apple catches up with the gaming community and sorts it out.

No disrespect to none gamers but i dont see the major problem with using mouse acceleration when doing day to day stuff. But if its a pain just get a good mouse.

This problem has always confused me as apple pride themselfs on catering to the creative professionals. So how can thease professional carry out their precision cad work with a mouse that doesent follow your exact movements.

As gamers bootcamp is the best option as in my opinion apple does not cater to gamers at all. Its such a simple thing and if they had a in house gaming advisors who is worth anything s/he would of picked up this problem right away.

It really is hilarious...and very painful.

As is always the case whenever somebody has the audacity to criticize an apple product the niche club act as though somebody walked in and took a dump in their front room or react like the Queen got slapped.

The reality is that this shouldn't be a problem, but plainly is, however much the Mac fans act with incredulity.

I have a number of PCs, I have a number of apple portable devices and a mac too.

Like the vast majority I am accustomed with the way a PC works, however much Mac fans get all precious over criticism the reality is that most people in the world are more likely to have grown acustomed with a PC.

For me there are examples on this thread of improving the experience to make the mouse act more in accordance to the way they do on a PC, but they don't rectify it entirely.

To me its simply that the mouse feels as though its going through a sticky part of the screen when moved over short distances,or like that feeling when you've slept on your arm and its gone dead and you don't have the feeling or responsiveness, a tick box that simply keeps the speed constant whether moved 1 pixel or the width of the screen would fix it (to my mind that is indeed an acceleration of 0) but still have the ability to have a fast responsive mouse.

I really can empathize with PC users on this one, Ive developed on the PC for years, and irrespective of what came first or who thinks their machine is better, you'd have thought this would have been addressed.

It means my Mac doesnt get switched on as much which is a shame and generally sours my vision of Apple...I see a number of things that put me off while using the Ipad too but I think the Mac community might call rape or something if I mention them. 😁

Very intelligent response. I actually have nothing against the overall Apple OS's and devices, esp for those who are more tech inept. This is not a knock on Apple, its reality, that people who dont wanna "deal with a PC" mostly get Apple as the best alternative. This is obvious since why would anyone buy something thats more expensive for no reason? My beef is that Apple is overpriced not because it is a better machine, but because it preys on the weak, i.e., one of the leaders of this gen's marketing scams, and they get rich of fit.

Back to the mouse thing... it is absolutely ludicrous for anyone to argue that an accelerated movement of any kind is "simpler" than linear movement. Period. Since Apple preys on its so called "simplicit" it seems to have hit a paradox here and its long time users are too brainwashed to admit this is true.

Yes, the purpose of "slowing down the mouse" in small motions is to gain "accuracy" in the small motions, possibly for graphics designers and other fine tuning motions. However, with such great zooming features that exist in almost every mainstream program these days, the need for a decelerated cursor motion is useless. For those used to this for years, it is what it is. If this were really true through some testing, it MUST mean that designers using Adobe products with a PC must be more inefficient, therefore worse designers than Mac users. Now there's something that sounds just dumb. Which leads back to the fact of, why doesnt Apple at least give an OPTION to turn off this scammy cursor accelerator?

And to those saying Apple revolutionized the windows OS and mouse cursro etc., fine, but irrelevent. The original cube cased Macintosh did not have accelerated movement. It was developed midway through their OS development, hardly a mouse revolution. I just got a 27" IPS 2560x1440 display for $380 out of Korea with the same LG display that Mac uses (except it is not one of the first 10% or so that passes their QC) and that was the only thing the original macs had going for it. Now, ther eis absolutely no reason a Mac as any advantage over a PC as long as u know how to run a thing called anti-virus/anti-spyware and simply dont download and open stuff you dont know.

I came here looking for a possible solution to address this clearly unnatural (if you have a brain, of course) mouse behaviour but all I learnt from this thread is how ignorant some mac users are...

Don't get me wrong, I tihnk the macbook pro is a very well designed machine, however it is little things like compulsory mouse acceleration that really make it uncomfortable for me personally to use.

Someone suggested recently to try Smoothmouse (I noticed that smoothmouse has only been available since Jan 2013 so it's very recent).

I had been looking for a fix a few months ago but gave up and tried to get used to the acceleration. Luckily I decided to look again and came across this.

I've just downloaded it and it's fantastic. It makes it seem just like a Windows mouse, no acceleration at all and works perfectly. Takes a few seconds to download, adjust the settings located in system preferences, and it overrides the OSX settings.

THIS IS THE ONLY FIX YOU NEED

+1 for smoothmouse.com, thanks DejanBadnjar!

Just a bit of background, have been reading this thread discussing mouse acceleration. My use case - I play Battlefield 3 (a FPS game for PC) and to improve my aim, I disabled mouse acceleration within windows - so now the mouse movement I'm used to is a 1:1 linear movement.

If you're interested in this, I learnt it from BF3 youtuber, rivaLxfactor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blw3DwzIQIk - and the video where he disables mouse acceleration via registry: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjCChK5-e8U

Problem is - when switching to mac (for work/uni) and using the mouse - there seems to be no way to turn off acceleration independently from the trackpad in Mountain Lion. (acceleration on the trackpad is useful, but for not for mouse for my purposes).

Installing Smoothmouse.com's utility, I've been able to independently turn off acceleration on the mouse, but maintain OS X acceleration for trackpads.

I selected "Enable for mice" in the SmoothMouse System Preferences Panel, selected "Off" for acceleration and set velocity to the second to left value on the slider (closer to slow). This seems to translate to a very similar sensitivity to the windows equivalent at 1920 x 1080 resolution.

For the trackpad I select "Enable for trackpads" and set acceleration to "Like in OS X" with the slider 4th from the left (slow). I've confirmed this works on the 13inch RMBP and the bluetooth magic trackpad.

Hope this helps anyone looking for a solution to the thread subject. I also donated 10 Euro to the developers, thanks so much for your utility and for allowing free use of your tool for those who can't afford to donate! =)

Derek.

WOW, thanks DejanBadnjar! The FREE SmoothMouse is amazing, and perfectly resolves Apple's shortcoming. End of discussion, authors of SmoothMouse rock, Apple not so much.

BTW, I noticed on SmoothMouse's forums about "OSX Mouse Lag", they include Synergy as one of the other 3 possible solutions.

And I can confirm, Synergy does perfectly solve the idiotic Apple mouse behavior. I use both SmoothMouse and Synergy solutions simultaneously.
