Depends on where they are. You can only merge free space into the immediately preceding partition. You must delete the partition you wish to merge, then drag the size handle at the end of the preceding partition around into the free space.

Thank you so much, after I reformatted the the "mother" external drive, that did it. it no longer has "child".
I was afraid to do that at first, I was clicking individual "child" it did not work.
Thank you thank you...I really do not like those external drive came with partitions.

FWIW, APFS uses containers (what were called partitions with HFS+). Within those containers, you can have one or more volumes ... similar to what you could do with HFS+

What seems to have become more common recently is manufacturers are now pre-formatting their drives with more than one partition.
